Although the architectural aspect is almost non-existent, a golden historical past is perceived in the Victorian houses on the boardwalk. These were built during the era of the Ruta del Tránsito, or Gold Route, which linked New York with California, to transport those who ventured out in search of gold. The boats arrived at the Atlantic coast and sailed the San Juan River, crossed Lake Cocibloca and then the passengers arrived by train to San Juan del Sur, where they boarded a boat to the port of California in the United States.
In total, a month’s journey, in which case, if they did it by land crossing the United States, it meant three months of travel, plus the risk of losing their lives in the continuous confrontations with the Indians. In fact, this was the first interoceanic canal in America.
